The medieval towers of San Gimignano rising above terracotta rooftops and surrounding vineyards, clear light, wide landscape

Day tours

San Gimignano & Volterra

Medieval towers and Etruscan stone, half an hour apart.

7 h day up to 8 guests Private · one group only

San Gimignano is only half an hour from my door, so we can be there before the coaches and walk the town while it is still calm. It is famous for its medieval towers and for Vernaccia, the local white — we stop for a glass.

After lunch we drive over to Volterra, higher and older, built on Etruscan foundations with a Roman theatre below the walls. The alabaster workshops here have been going for centuries and are worth stepping into.

This is an easy, cultural day rather than a wine-focused one — good for a mixed group, and gentle on children.
