The Val d’Orcia is the Tuscany of imagination: rolling hills the colour of wheat, single cypress trees on the skyline, a small chapel standing alone in the fields. It is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape about seventy minutes from Casole d’Elsa, and it deserves a full, well-timed day. Here is how to see it properly.

Go early — the light does the work

The single biggest difference between a good Val d’Orcia day and a great one is timing. The famous spots look magical in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon, and flat and grey in the middle of a bright day — the same hours the tour buses arrive. Starting early means you get the best photo spots almost to yourself.

The classic loop

A relaxed itinerary through the valley:

  1. The cypress roads near San Quirico d’Orcia — the winding avenues you have seen a hundred times without knowing where they are.
  2. Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta — the little chapel between two rows of cypresses, best reached on a short walk most visitors skip.
  3. Pienza — the “ideal Renaissance town”, perfect for lunch and famous for its pecorino cheese.
  4. Montepulciano — a hill town of honey-coloured stone, where the afternoon ends with a cellar tasting of Vino Nobile.

For photographers: start before sunrise

If photography is the point of your trip, the valley is at its very best at first light, when mist sits in the hollows below the farmhouses. That means leaving in the dark — only really possible with a driver who already lives nearby. See the sunrise photo tour.

Twenty minutes after sunrise the mist burns off and the magic is gone. Being early is everything.

When to go

Spring (green hills, wildflowers) and late summer into autumn (golden fields, harvest light) are the most beautiful. Midsummer middays are harsh — plan around the mornings.
