The drive
North out of the Val d'Elsa to pick up the FI-PI-LI, the toll-free dual carriageway that follows the Arno west towards the coast. The first twenty minutes are hills, the rest is the plain, and it is about an hour and a half to either city.
Pisa is slightly nearer, Lucca slightly further and — for what it is worth — the one most people are gladder to have seen.
Two cities, one day
Lucca is a walled Renaissance city where the walls themselves are the attraction: broad, tree-lined and completely intact, with a path along the top that people walk and cycle right around the town. Inside, it is flat, quiet and largely free of traffic.
Pisa has the Piazza dei Miracoli, which most groups want to see and few want to spend a whole day at. Half a day each is the shape this usually takes; if you want the van waiting between the two, say so and I will quote the day instead of the leg.
Getting in and out
Both cities have limited-traffic centres, so the set-down is at a gate or a nearby square rather than at a monument. In Lucca that is no hardship — the whole centre is a few minutes across on foot.
For Pisa, if the airport is the real destination rather than the tower, that is simply the airport run and it is a shorter journey. Tell me which of the two you mean when you book.

How many people fit in the van?
Up to 8 passengers with their luggage, in a nine-seat Mercedes Vito. Groups of three to eight are exactly what the van is for — you all travel together instead of being split across two cars. For larger parties I can arrange a second vehicle; just tell me the number.
Do you charge per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. The price is the same whether there are three of you or eight, which is what makes a group transfer good value — the more of you, the less it costs each. Every journey is quoted on request, so send me your date, airport and group size and the figure comes back.
Which airports do you cover?
Florence Peretola (FLR) and Pisa Galileo Galilei (PSA) are the closest, both a little over an hour away. I also drive to and from Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA), Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN), Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY), Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Naples Capodichino (NAP).
Can you drive us to a villa in the middle of nowhere?
Yes — that is most of my work. Hotels, villas, agriturismi and farmhouses down unsealed white roads around Siena, Casole d'Elsa, Chianti and the Val d'Orcia. Send me the address or a map pin and I will find it; if the last stretch is rough, I will tell you in advance.
